IQ 109: top of average, explained

Yes. An IQ of 109 is in the average range, at or just above the exact middle of the population. You score at least as high as about half of people your age, a solid result for school, work and everyday life.

Where 109 sits on the bell curve

An IQ of 109 is 9 points above the average of 100, or 0.6 standard deviations. It is higher than about 73% of people of the same age, shown by the shaded area below. This is the peak of the bell curve, where more people score than anywhere else.

557085100115130145 IQ 109

On other IQ scales, the same result would be about 110 on a test with a standard deviation of 16, such as older editions of the Stanford-Binet, and 114 on the Cattell scale, which uses 24. Why scales differ.

IQ 109 meaning: a closer look

An IQ of 109 is the very top of the average range: one more point and the label changes to high average. It is higher than roughly 73% of people. The boundary is a convention, not a real difference in ability. No test can reliably separate 109 from 110. If anything, a score of 109 is a good reminder that classification labels are a convenient summary of a continuous scale, not separate groups of people.

What research says

Could you have guessed 109? How well people estimate their own IQ

A 2012 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin combined 154 effect sizes from 41 published studies that compared people's estimates of their own ability with their measured scores. The overall correlation was r = 0.33: real, but modest. Estimates were more accurate when people rated themselves on relative scales against a clearly named comparison group, and when the ability in question was numerical rather than general. Self-estimates of less familiar abilities, such as reasoning speed, matched test results less well.

So if a result of 109 surprised you, in either direction, you are in good company. A correlation of 0.33 means many people's guesses miss by a wide margin, often because the people we compare ourselves with are not a typical cross-section. Seeing a measured 109 next to your own impression can be useful: it is a slightly above-average score at the very top of the average range. A single test is also an estimate, so treat both your guess and your score as rough guides, not verdicts.

What 109 looks like among real people

73 in 100

If you lined up 100 people of your age, about 73 would score lower than 109 and about 27 would score the same or higher. The orange dot marks your place in the line.

About 9th of 30your likely place in a class of 30 people, ranked from the highest score
About 13,700would score 109 or higher in a full 50,000-seat stadium
About 274,000people in a city of one million would score at this level or above

A score here puts you in the middle of almost any group: about as many people score above you as below.

How precise is a score of 109?

No IQ test measures to the exact point. On a professional test, a result of 109 usually comes with a likely range of about five points either way: 104 to 114. That range runs from the 61st to the 82nd percentile, and it crosses from average into high average.

Because this is the most crowded part of the scale, a retest could easily move you a few places either side of the middle without anything having changed.

On the Assessivo test, each correct answer is worth about 2.5 points, so 109 falls between two possible results: 108 for 21 correct answers and 110 for 22. How our score is worked out.

So if you scored 109 once, a retest on another day could reasonably land anywhere from 104 to 114. Online tests are less precise still, so treat any online result as a rough estimate.

IQ 109 and mental age in children

Early IQ tests for children worked with a "mental age", the age whose typical performance a child matched. The IQ was that mental age divided by the child's real age, times 100. Turned around, the formula shows what a score of 109 would have meant for children of different ages: working ahead of their years.

Real ageMental age at IQ 109
55 years 5 months
77 years 8 months
99 years 10 months
1112 years
1314 years 2 months

The same 109 stands for a gap of about 5 months at age 5 but 1 year 2 months at 13, because the formula scales with age. That is one reason it broke down for teenagers and adults, whose test performance stops rising every year. Today's tests compare you with people of the same age instead, so a mental age is only a way to picture a child's score, never a description of an adult.

What an IQ of 109 means for you

It is the last score in the average band: one more point would move it up a band.

  • You reason at least as well as the typical person your age on new problems.
  • Almost any course or career is open at this level; what you learn and practise matters much more.
  • The upper part of this range is close to high average, and practice or a different test could tip it over 110.

Questions about an IQ of 109

What percentile is an IQ of 109?

An IQ of 109 is at about the 73rd percentile, which means it is higher than about 73% of people of the same age.

Is 109 a high IQ?

No. 109 is in the average range. High IQ usually refers to scores of 120 or 130 and above.

Can an IQ of 109 get into Mensa?

Not on its own. Mensa accepts the top 2% on an approved, supervised test, which is usually 130 or above. 109 is 21 points below that.

How common is an IQ of 109 or higher?

About 27% of people score 109 or higher, roughly 1 in 4. In a stadium of 50,000 people, about 13,700 would score at this level or above.

Why is my 109 IQ different from what I expected?

Most people are not very accurate judges of their own IQ. A meta-analysis of 41 studies found self-estimates correlate only about 0.33 with tested scores, so surprises are common. Estimates were sharper when people had a clear comparison group in mind. A score of 109 sits at the top of the average range.

What mental age is an IQ of 109?

Under the old ratio formula, a 9-year-old with an IQ of 109 would perform like a typical child of about 9 years 10 months, roughly 10 months ahead. The idea only works for children: an adult who scores 109 simply did better than most adults of the same age on the test.

Is 109 above average?

Slightly above the exact middle of 100, but still inside the average range of 90 to 109, so it is described as average, not above average.

What is the difference between an IQ of 100 and 109?

A small one. Both are in the average range, and with a professional test's margin of about five points either way, their likely ranges overlap.

Is an IQ of 109 good for a student?

Yes. It is right in the middle of the population, and school results depend at least as much on effort, teaching and interest as on IQ.
