What does an 81 IQ mean?

An 81 IQ is at about the 10th percentile: higher than roughly 1 person in 10. It is in the low average range. That percentile happens to be one of the best-known lines in testing: in the United States, recruits who score below the 10th percentile on the military's own aptitude test cannot enlist.

Where 81 sits on the bell curve

An IQ of 81 is 19 points below the average of 100, or 1.27 standard deviations. About 10.3% of people of the same age score lower, the shaded sliver at the far left of the curve below.

On a test with a standard deviation of 16, such as older Stanford-Binet editions, the same result would be about 80, and on the Cattell scale, which uses 24, about 70. Why scales differ.

A closer look at an IQ of 81

The US military uses the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT), not an IQ test, but it is scored as a percentile of young adults. According to the Department of Defense, people in AFQT Category V, below the 10th percentile, are not eligible for enlistment. On the standard IQ scale, the 10th percentile corresponds to about 81, which is why this score keeps coming up in discussions of military standards.

The comparison shouldn't be stretched too far: the AFQT measures word knowledge, reading, arithmetic and maths, which depend heavily on schooling, so a person's AFQT percentile and IQ percentile can differ. What the line does show is how ordinary 81 is: roughly 1 in 10 young adults are at or below this level, and many of them work in every kind of job.

How an IQ of 81 is classified

Different tests and manuals use different words for the same score, and the words have changed over time. Here is where 81 falls on each of the systems you are most likely to meet.

Borderline intellectual functioning and an IQ of 81

Scores from roughly 70 to 85 are often described as borderline intellectual functioning. It is not a diagnosis of intellectual disability: most people in this range live independently, work and raise families. But a 2014 systematic review of 49 studies found that the group faces more neurocognitive, social and mental health difficulties than average, and called it "almost invisible" in research and services.

On a perfect bell curve, about 13.6% of people score between 70 and 85, so this is far from rare. People in the range often learn best with clear, concrete instructions, worked examples and extra time for new or written tasks, and often do well in practical, hands-on work.

An IQ of 81 and US military entry

The US armed forces don't use IQ tests: they use the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT), scored as a percentile of young adults. On the IQ scale, 81 is at about the 10th percentile, which would correspond to AFQT Category IV. The comparison is only rough, because the AFQT tests word knowledge, reading and maths, which depend heavily on schooling.

Category VBelow the 10th percentile (about IQ 80 or below). Not eligible to enlist.
Category IV10th to 30th percentile (about IQ 81 to 92). Limited by law to 4% of each service's yearly enlistments, or up to 20% if the Secretary of Defense allows.
Category III and above31st percentile and up. No limit. Non-graduates need at least this to enlist.

Could a score of 81 be wrong?

Low scores are the most fragile results on any test, because almost everything that goes wrong on the day pulls a score down. Common reasons include:

  • Running out of time. On timed tests, including ours, an unanswered question counts as wrong.
  • Nerves. A review of 238 studies found test anxiety consistently linked with lower scores.
  • Tiredness. Sleep loss hits attention and speed hardest, which costs points against the clock.
  • Language and format. Taking a test in a second language, on a small screen or in an unfamiliar format can lower a result without saying anything about reasoning.

What an 81 means on our test

The Assessivo test moves in steps of about 2.5 points, so it can't give exactly 81: the nearest results are 80 (10 correct) and 83 (11 correct). Every question has four options, so someone guessing every answer at random averages nine correct, a score of 78. So an online result at this level is only a little above chance and is best treated as a rough reading. A calm retake, after a look at some sample questions, will tell you more.

What is the mental age for an IQ of 81?

The first IQ tests, for children, described performance as a "mental age": the age whose typical performance a child matched. IQ was mental age divided by real age, times 100. Run that old formula backwards and you get the figures below, for children only.

Child's agePerforms like a typical child of about
64 years 10 months
86 years 6 months
108 years 1 month
129 years 9 months
1411 years 4 months

For adults the idea doesn't work, which is why David Wechsler replaced it in 1939 with today's method: compare each person with others of the same age. An adult who scores 81 has an adult's knowledge, interests and experience. The score only says how their test performance compares with other adults'.

How common is an IQ of 81?

10 in 100

Line up 100 people of the same age and about 10 would score 81 or lower; the orange dot marks the place. In a town of 10,000 people, that is about 1,030.

The bar shows the likely range on a professional test, about five points either way: 76 to 86, from the 5th to the 18th percentile.

Questions about an IQ of 81

What percentile is an IQ of 81?

An IQ of 81 is at about the 10th percentile: it is higher than about 10.3% of people of the same age, and roughly 1 person in 10 scores this low or lower.

Is 81 a low IQ?

Yes. 81 is 19 points, or 1.27 standard deviations, below the average of 100. On the classic Wechsler labels it is low average. A single score is an estimate with a margin of error of about five points, so 81 is best read as roughly 76 to 86.

Is an IQ of 81 a learning disability?

No. 81 is above the range usually associated with intellectual disability, which is about 70 or below. It falls in the range sometimes called borderline intellectual functioning, which is not a disability in itself.

What is the mental age for an IQ of 81?

Mental age is an idea from the earliest tests for children. By the old formula, a 10-year-old scoring 81 would perform like a typical child of about 8 years 1 month. For adults it has no meaning: modern IQ tests compare adults with other adults, and an adult who scores 81 is not like a child.

Can you join the military with an IQ of 81?

The US military uses its own test, the AFQT, not IQ. Applicants must score at or above the 10th percentile on it, and an IQ of 81 is at about the 10th percentile on the IQ scale, but AFQT results depend a lot on schooling, so the two can differ. Other countries set their own standards.
